DataExaminer
At the rate digital devices and the web are storing data, the problems of e-discovery, intelligence gathering, and digital forensics will only be compounded. It is expected that case sizes and cases loads will easily double in the next 12 - 18 months. DataExaminer addresses the issue of millions of items in any given case and handles them with speed and efficiency.DataExaminer empowers an examiner to sift through and find any correlations within terabytes of data. With relative ease the examiner can find items of interest that go undiscovered with other products. Other products currently available require the examiner to mentally recall fragments of information to draw correlations between handfuls of files. This is just not feasible given the amount of data being found on digital devices.
DataExaminer has three primary strengths and functions: Process, Analysis, and Report (PAR). DE is designed to ingest millions of pieces of data while maintaining case integrity within the DataStore. File type or format is not relevant as DE will determine the actual file type and then determine the encoding and language for files containing text. A full index is created during processing allowing for robust analysis and reporting.
Files can be added to DE by either crawling web content or files from digital devices such as hard drives, cellular phones, and removable storage media. While data is being processed during the "add data" function, correlations are established automatically where they exist between newly added data and/or data that is already in the DataStore. When high profile data has been added to DE the examiner can flag it for immediate notification when that data has been added from a different data set or case. In addition when data is added, such as operating system files, they are automatically categorized into a known file category folder that needn't be looked at right away.
The analysis function of DE is another of its strengths. Once correlations have been established automatically between files within one case or data set the examiner can review those and determine their importance. When correlations have been established between different cases or data sets the examiner may find there is more to the case then previously supposed. The analysis function allows for full indexed key word and string word searches. Boolean searches are also possible through an easy to use interface where complex search queries can be built on the fly. Search results are displayed and viewable with a "next" and "previous" interface allowing for quick review of pertinent data. DE takes analysis to a whole new level by displaying results that contain content that is "similar" to that found with the search query but does not contain any of the searched criteria. This puts the technology to work for the examiner and may result in data being discovered that would have gone unnoticed using another application.
Reporting is where DE makes the examiner shine. The examiner will be able to pull together and report on the data that was found and demonstrate how it is connected within the case or to other cases. The intuitive reporting function will allow the examiner to add files, content snippets with references to originating files, images, and graphs displaying correlations.
